What is Casus Diplomacy?

The Treaty of Westphalia in 1648, which marked the conclusion of the 30 Years’ War, holds a pivotal place in history, as it not only ushered in an era of peace in Europe but also sowed the seeds of modern diplomacy. Prior to this landmark agreement, the prevailing means for nations to maintain order often gravitated towards armed conflict, with diplomacy playing a considerably minor role.

The recourse to violence, which had long been the default option for states before 1648, had wreaked havoc, particularly across the European continent. Frequent resort to the concept of ‘Casus Belli’, signifying a ’cause for war,’ led to territorial invasions and widespread destruction. In the 17th century, during the emergence of this term, diplomacy was still in its infancy, representing a fledgling response to the horrors of warfare. Over time, it has matured into the preeminent pillar upholding global stability.

Our initiative, Casus Diplomacy, derives its name from the concept of ‘Casus Belli’ and serves as a reminder that the foundation of a harmonious world order can only be constructed through diplomacy and dialogue, firmly rejecting the perils of war.
